About the Book
Welcome to our page describing the contents of "Laughlin, Nevada, History Book". Laughlin just a few years ago didn't exist.  There was a small motel with some very old slot machines and a dirt road leading to the place.  Anyone headed there was either from the Arizona side of the Colorado River or fishermen from southern California.
Then a boomtown burst upon the scene and within five years some major hotels-casinos were being built. Shortly after the tourists flooded in for the action.
Nevada and Arizona have many ghost towns and when the boom started in Laughlin nobody ever thought it too would become one.  Several events happened that impacted the boomtown of Laughlin:  First the "Junk Bond" market collapsed.  Junk Bonds helped finance all the new major hotels in Laughlin. Then the "coup de gras" hit!  The Indian tribes in Arizona were given the right to have casinos on their reservations.  With 28 Indian operated/owned gaming venues in Arizona traffic to Laughlin dwindled down to a slow trickle.  Laughlin is presently in deep trouble.  Room rates are at bargain basement levels and casino action is slow. Hopefully the owners paid off their mortgages before the boom went bust.
This book gives you a peek at the unexpected end of the boom.

Following is the commentary in the "Gamblers' Book Club" catalog that describes this book.
LAUGHLIN, NEVADA, HISTORY (Vol 2)  GBC Catalog #53 9904 (ISBN # 0-961 6633-6-7)
Although previous volumes covering the period l983 to l987 is out of print, this second volume summarizes and updates most of the material the first volume contained.  Tracing the movement of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation until recently for casino gambling and legalized race and sports book betting.  Through newspaper articles, reviews how hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in this new "boom town" annually.  Written for the researcher, potential investor, future visitor or resident.  Great background information includes facts on who the "movers and shakers" are in government and casino activity, while looking to the future.  200 pages, paperbound (GBC #539904)
This book is out-of-date now that the Indians have saturated Arizona with their own casinos and the optimism about the future of Laughlin has been lost. But readers will find it interesting to view those high-flying days.
