Thanks for turning to this page to read about our book on the little-known mountain resort known as "Mt. Charleston".  Most tourists have a mental picture of Las Vegas and its surrounding area as a barren desert.. hot in the summer and cold during the winter months.  That is true but not completely accurate.  West and north-west of Las Vegas is the Spring Mountain Range with the highest point just under 12,000 ft. elevation.

Following are some newspaper stories that tell more of the story and what our book  entitled "Mt. Charleston History Book" contains:

>From the "Gambler's Book Club" catalog comes the following:

MT. CHARLESTON LODGE HISTORY BOOK.
A history of one of Las Vegas' fastest-growing scenic-recreation areas.  How it grew, the "pioneers" who had the foresight to allow the area to develop and expand gradually.  The lodge, the focal point for the entire mountain resort, is the center of recent  history.  Taylor, an historian, tells the story through newspaper clippings in chronological order.  Fascinating reading for anyone visiting the area.  200 pages, paperbound GBC catalog #532704 (ISBN 0-961 6633-4-0)

NEW MT. CHARLESTON HISTORY BOOK REVEALED  (From the Beehive Newspaper)
"There had been no recorded history of the wonderful alpine-like recreation area," Taylor said, "so I gathered together all of my records and files from the early days when the Hacienda Hotel owners developed the area.

The 200 page book is much like a complete historical scrapbook, all the important events and developments that have taken place on Mt. Charleston since E.W. Griffith built a rustic lodge and rental cabins nearby.

In this latest edition are even new pages bringing to light some of the mystery surrounding the crash of the secret Air Force C-54 transport plane that hit the summit November l7th l955.  A veil of secrecy has covered the event for years.
Now it has come out that the crash had a lot to do with the Cold War with Russia.

Also included in this newest edition are pages from the files of Mary Jane Griffith Reiter whose father helped develop the original community and hunting lodge in Kyle Canyon.

MOUNT CHARLESTON GOLF RESORT PLANNED (From the Review Journal By Marcia Pledger)
Development of a $35 million golf resort on Mount Charleston will begin this summer, said Frank Mummey, resort president.

Mount Charleston Alpine Golf Resort and Alpine Village Development are scheduled to open on the south side of Kyle Canyon Road, about 30 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

LOCAL HISTORIAN UPDATES MT. CHARLESTON SERIES (From Las Vegas Sun By Bob Shemeligian)
The eviction of the "Mount Charleston Squatter," the Western Coach bus roll-over that injured 40 Girl Scouts, and the l990 snowstorms that trapped vacationers in their cabins.

All these mountain stories and many more from the past years are brought to life by local historian and author Dick Taylor in his "M. Charleston History Book."

Through newspaper clippings, local fliers and letters, Taylor's book covering the mountain area's history shows how the vacation spot 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas has grown from a weekend hideaway and lumber operation to a thriving tourist destination.

(The above newspaper story has been shortened because of space limitations.)

Who should own this book?  Anyone interested in hiking, snow sports, mountain biking, cliff climbing, honeymoons in modern yet rustic looking cabins, clean air and brilliant stars in the heavens at night!
